Onder: Read my lips, no new energy taxes
June 24, 2008
State Rep. Bob Onder today pledged to oppose all efforts to raise energy taxes “relating to climate change that would result in a net increase in federal revenue.”
The pledge is from Americans for Prosperity, a group now headed by former House Speaker Pro Tem Carl Bearden, R-St. Charles. Onder, R-St. Charles, signed the following:
I, Bob Onder, pledge to the taxpayers of Missouri’s Ninth District and to the American people that I will oppose any legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in federal government revenue.
“If the other candidates in this race are serious about lowering the price of gas, the least they can do is sign this pledge to oppose energy tax increases,” Onder said in a statement. “If they don’t sign it, we can assume that they would consider, or even favor higher gas taxes.”
The pledge is in response to legislation that was considered in Congress that places a cap on U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions.
Five Republicans, four Democrats, a Libertarian and perhaps an independent candidate are seeking the seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, R-Columbia.
