Detroit News Special Letter: Stop job-sapping climate tax bill

February 11, 2010

From the Detroit News:

Thank you for running a correction about a recent item in “Political Insider” (”Pick him, or him: PAC doesn’t want to see Gary Peters in office,” Jan. 28). For the record, Americans for Prosperity and its state chapters have an explicit policy of not endorsing candidates for office; we are also not a political action committee.

The mission of Americans for Prosperity is to educate and engage citizens in support of restraining state and federal government growth. Therefore, we were pleased when Paul Welday and Andrew Raczkowski, both Republicans seeking to unseat Congressman Gary Peters of Bloomfield Hills, signed our “No climate tax” pledge.

Both candidates should be commended for pledging to oppose any climate change-related legislation, such as cap-and-trade, that includes a net increase in federal revenue. By contrast, Peters voted in favor of cap-and-trade, which would cost Michigan’s 9th Congressional District an estimated 77,760 jobs and decrease household incomes by $6,419 by 2030.

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the cap-and-trade bill Peters voted for is a $846 billion increase in federal taxes.
